5 Ways Automatic Journaling Changed My Life
After six months of using Journaly, here are the unexpected benefits of having an AI automatically capture my daily life.
Your Thoughts Shouldn't Be Anyone Else's Business
A journal is the one place you should be able to write anything—your fears, dreams, frustrations, victories, embarrassing moments, and everything in between. That level of vulnerability requires absolute trust that your words stay private.
Unfortunately, many digital journaling apps treat your entries like any other data: stored on company servers, potentially readable by employees, vulnerable to breaches, and sometimes even analyzed for advertising purposes.
We built Journaly differently from day one.
End-to-End Encryption
Every journal entry in Journaly is encrypted end-to-end. This means:
- Your entries are encrypted on your device before they ever leave it
- We never have access to your unencrypted journal content
- Even if our servers were compromised, your entries would be unreadable
- Only you hold the keys to decrypt your journal
Think of it like writing in a locked diary, except the lock is mathematically impossible to pick.
Local-First Storage
Your journal is stored on your device first. Cloud sync is optional and encrypted. If you prefer, you can use Journaly entirely offline with on-device AI—your entries never leave your phone.
This local-first approach means you're never dependent on our servers to access your life's memories.
Biometric Authentication
Face ID and fingerprint unlock add an additional layer of protection. Even if someone gets physical access to your device, they can't read your journal without your biometric authentication.
No Tracking or Analytics
We don't use invasive analytics or tracking in Journaly. We don't monitor which entries you read most often, what times you journal, or what topics you write about. That information is yours alone.
The only analytics we collect are basic technical metrics (like app crashes) to improve performance, and even those are anonymized.
Data Ownership & Export
Your data belongs to you, always. Export your entire journal at any time in multiple formats:
- Markdown files (readable in any text editor)
- PDF (formatted and print-ready)
- JSON (structured data for developers)
If you ever decide to leave Journaly, you take your memories with you. No lock-in. No hostage-holding.
GDPR Compliant
We're fully GDPR compliant, which means:
- Right to access your data
- Right to correct your data
- Right to delete your data
- Right to port your data to another service
These aren't just legal requirements for us—they're fundamental principles.
The Bottom Line
Privacy in journaling isn't a feature—it's a requirement. Without it, you can't truly be honest with yourself. Without honesty, journaling loses its power.
We built Journaly for ourselves first, and we demanded the highest level of privacy. Now we're offering that same protection to you.
